The Starter Declaration Explained

Published 13/06/2025

When setting up payroll in Mighty, you'll need to select a starter declaration. This declaration will impact the suggested tax code that your payroll uses, but if you have been issued a tax code by HMRC, you can always overwrite this later in the payroll set-up.

There are three possible declarations, so we'll explain each of them below:

This is my first job since 6th April:

This means this is your first job since 6th April and you have not received any other taxable employment income. This means, unless HMRC have confirmed otherwise, the full tax code will apply (1257L for 2025/26).

This is my only job but I have had another job since 6th April:

This means this is your only job, but since 6th April you have had another job or received other taxable employment income. Unless HMRC have confirmed otherwise, this will result in a 1257L M1/W1 tax code (2025/26).

I have another job or receive a pension

This means that you have another job or receive other taxable employment income. Unless HMRC have confirmed otherwise, this will result in a BR tax code.
